1000 Words is a non-profit, Black-owned art space located in the heart of Indianapolis, deeply committed to uplifting emerging Black and Brown visual artists. Our mission is to offer a platform for our local artists, champion equity, and ensure art is accessible to all.
1000 Words is a safe space that highlights the work of under-represented, under-funded and often over-looked Black and Brown artists. We don’t charge artists to share and show their work. We provide a place for artists and curators to work and grow. We host free art events and classes open to the public.
1000 Words has received recognition for our work in the community. We most recently were awarded the INRC 2023 Collaborative Spirit Award. Which celebrates unique, sustainable projects that demonstrate strong neighbor collaboration, leadership, and community partnerships that enhance the quality of life in our community.
